Traditional processes are slow, fragmented, and often involve multiple handoffs across different platforms. This creates risk, delays, and higher costs when equipment downtime can’t afford to wait.
RCR Mining Technologies (RCR) is a world leader in material handling solutions. They design and manufacture a wide range of large-scale plant and machinery that handles, moves, and screens heavy-duty, high-value minerals.
They’ve led the industry for 50 years and they’ve stayed there by sticking to one thing: continual innovation.
Their equipment plays a mission-critical role in the operations of major mining clients. If one machine goes down, entire production can stall and that comes at a real cost. There’s a direct link between operational efficiency and the bottom line, which means reliability and speed matter. A lot.
Ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of critical-path equipment is vital for our clients.
That’s why spare parts are such a big deal. Getting the right part, quickly, is key to keeping everything running. RCR knew their existing process, with multiple handoffs and tracking activity across different platforms wasn’t cutting it anymore. It was time to rethink the experience.
They had a clear vision: a streamlined, integrated way to manage parts ordering with the accuracy, control, and confidence customers need. Not just a catalogue, something much more powerful.
To bring the vision to life, they assembled a joint team led by Alister MacPherson (Head of Strategy, Growth and Innovation at RCR), combining internal expertise from the NRW IT and NRW 365 teams with Fusion5’s delivery leadership and technical depth.
What they built
At the heart of the transformation was a new eCommerce portal, purpose-built to handle complex B2B transactions and spare parts ordering, integrate with customers’ ERP systems, and make the whole process faster, clearer, and smarter.
To bring the vision to life, the team extended RCR’s existing Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations platform by adding Microsoft Dynamics 365 B2B Commerce and Asset Management.
They combined out-of-the-box features from Commerce Asset Management with custom-built functionality across the eCommerce layer, Commerce Scale Unit, and back office.
A unique element was the custom 3D rendering component, built using Three.js and React libraries, which gave RCR full control to manage asset hotspots and bring each machine’s inventory to life.

A few standout features:
- A 3D model view of equipment so customers can drill down to individual components and identify the exact part they need.
- A tailored inventory for each customer, linked to their specific equipment.
- Full integration with SAP, allowing automated login and seamless processing of quotes.
- Accurate, real-time data giving customers a single source of truth for quoting and order management.
- Real-time messaging and tracking with the RCR support team within the system.
And yes, we’re also claiming a world-first: this was the first implementation to integrate SAP and Microsoft Dynamics 365 eCommerce using the SAP OCI 5.0 protocol.
Bringing it to life
The five-month delivery window was tight. But the collaboration was strong, and the goal was clear: improve the experience for customers, and for RCR’s own team.
To test the platform, RCR brought in one of their most valued (and technically complex) clients: Rio Tinto. Rio required full SAP integration to realise the efficiency, usability, and data value the platform promised.
They supported the vision but made it clear that success hinged on execution:
"Make sure you’ve got the best technical team on this."
They did. And it worked.
What the experience feels like now
The new platform gives customers a much smoother, smarter way to manage spare parts. They can interact with a 3D model of their equipment, drill down to specific components, and instantly see which parts are available for order.
They can access live product information and contracted pricing, all tailored to their own machines.
From there, they can request a quote, receive it, approve it, and convert it to an order all in a few clicks.
RCR has taken another innovative step, building a platform that can scale and support future growth.
Why it matters
This wasn’t just about building and rolling out new tech. It was about creating more certainty. Certainty that customers could improve how they optimise their equipment. Certainty they could get the right part, quickly and cost-effectively. Certainty that internal teams had visibility and control. And certainty that the investment in innovation would create long-term value.
The new portal went live on time and budget and delivers immediate results. But more than that, it sets the foundation for what’s next. It opens the door to future capabilities: like preventative maintenance, smarter parts manuals, and connected documentation.
Innovation never stands still. And neither does RCR.
